So let’s take a look at the book

Cover Art

Continuing the awesome trend of 8th edition army, The Empire is a 96 page full-colour hardback.  The first thing that is instantly noticeable is the cover art.  All the hardback army books released since 8th edition landed in June 2010 have moved away from the ‘Gothic Warhammer’ of 7th Edition and gone more in the direction of the new plastic kits and wild monsters to give more of a cartoon feel to the current artistic style.  The Empire cover, on the other hand,  has a gritty feel yet still is clearly in the current GW art style.  The one aspect that did change was the focus of the art.  Since Warhammer first moved from a single rule book and into army books back in 4th Edition, the Empire cover art has always been a group of tightly packed men struggling in battle, this cover changes that and depicts a single hero front and centre manning the barricades with his army in the back ground.  A change in direction of the army?

Background

The background sections of the book are as you would expect, it runs through the history from the founding of the empire, the rise of Sigmar, uniting the tribes of men and defeating the Orc horde at Black Fire Pass.  The great campaigns against the Skaven, the loss of the Solland Runfang to Gorbad Ironclaw, the Wars of the Vampire Counts and Magnus the Pious shattering the chaos invasion in very Tolkienesq fashion (the relief of Helm Deep).  There is some stories of old missing, but quite a lot of new background revealed.  The events following the Crowning of the Everchosen in 2519 which were played out in the Storm of Chaos campaign are glossed over. The all references to Valten have been removed, from the timeline aswell as the background of Luthor Huss and Volkmar.  Upon discovering this I did some rereading of the other recent army books and the 8th edition rule book to find that the whole timeline has been reset to pre Archaon’s invasion.

The main story that has been added is the 3rd battle of Black Fire Pass.  Warhammer Forge were previewing an early copy of this book at the recent Forge World open day.  The conversation I had with the games developer in charge of the project said it is a new campaign book along the lines of Tamurkhan which centers around the events at Black fire Pass in 2522.  An Orc invasion is met by the armies of the Empire led by Marius Leitdorf , The Mad Count and Karl Franz.

New Units

The other obvious areas where new background has been introduced is to bring in the new units types.  The Demigryphs are captured from the depths of the Reikwald forest and broken to the will of their riders, while the witch hunters have always been deeply intermingled with the Empire history, putting them into the army book is a small step.  The 2 new Arcane Battle Alters , the Luminark of Hysh and the Celestial Hurricanum have been portrayed as inventions of the highest minds in the respective colleges of magic, and new technology that sits nicely alongside the creations from Nuln.

Magic Items

There has been an awful lot of discussion about the number of items that are included in the new books, I personally don’t see an issue with it.  There are 9 items in the Empire book and while I am not an Empire player I can still give a good summary of the background and attribute of each item by reading only its title.  Other than the Imperial Banner or one of the items relating to Magnus the Pious I am hard pressed to think of  any that are embedded so deeply in the history of the empire that they are worth a place in the list.

Artwork

By far my favourite piece in the book is on page 33 and shows a Fire Mage with his cloak billowing and staff ablaze.  This was a half page black and white image in the 7th edition book and has been reproduced in colour for the latest version.
So that about concludes my overview of the book itself.  Overall I am very happy with the feel of the book.  It’s packed with great art, background and cool pictures enough to be an excellent purchase even if you are not interested in the rules.Other new works that stand out are the images for the Luminark and the Hurricanum and the new art for Karl Franz.  The old images from previous books are still included, the stand out one being the image of the Griffon riders attacking the giants from the Warhammer 8th rulebook.

Modeling

I’ve been really busy with this.  I managed to get loads of stuff done.  Assembled a Mantic Dwarf army, around 200 models + half a dozen war machines.  They are nice models and really easy to assemble.  I was able to fly through the units.  I picked up a set of the new GW cleaning tools and have been using  them to tidy up the mold lines.I finished painting my Ogres.  32 Ironguts, 12 Leadbelchers and 4 plain Bulls.  I have also built them some movement trays.  These have been really easy to get painted.  I used black dip and they have come out looking really good for the amount of time spent on them.  I have started painting my Arachnarok spider after it has spent 3 months sat on my shelf half done.  I built and 90% painted my garden of morr and storm of magic fulcrums.  Painted 10 Dark Elf shades and finaly i have dug out my flames of war Panzerkompanie and put some finishing touches to them.  I have not played flames of war for over 2 years, i’m unsure if i should look at selling  the army on or try to play some more games with it.

Other

Away from gaming and modeling i have also been quite busy.  I’ve listened to an audio book by Dan Abnett, Torn and Talon.  I have finished my re-read of the Game of  Thrones series and have now got round to starting a Dance with Dragons.  Its starting pretty slow but its good to get back on the Tyrion storyline as he was absent from book 4.  I’ve been playing some online poker over at www.partypoker.com.  I have also been watching the new series on Fringe but i missed the first episode so i don’t really know whats going on!  I’ve also been eagerly waiting for the iOS 5 update for my iPhone and iPad.

Gaming

I went to the Throne of Skulls tournament last weekend.  It was a lot of fun but for the most part the games were not very hard.  In the indie Tournament scene 50% of the players at a 100 player event would be ranked in the top 100.  At the ToS it was more like 10%.  Still, it was a fun event and i would probably go again.  Away from tournaments i’ve actually managed to get a load of gaming done this month.  Something like 10 games with my Dark Elves, Ogres, Vampires and Deamons.  I’ve been mixing it up a little with different races since returning from the ETC.

So i’ll start with the easy one, the Mantic Games MALAK’S LEGION OF DEATH – ARMY DEAL. This box set comes in at £99 on the Mantic webstore and an additional Ghoul Troop deal for £20.

That gives you the following stuff.

Vampire on winged nightmare/hellsteed
2x Vampires on foot
Wight King BSB
Wight King on foot

50 Ghouls
40 Skellies
40 Grave Guard
5 Black knights
5 Wraiths

So using 4 of the characters (Lord on foot, Vamp on foot, Vamp on Hellsteed and a Wight BSB) and all the troops, with relevant command group upgrades, the army comes in at 2350 points. THATS WITH NO MAGIC ITEMS OR POWERS!! So throw in a couple of hundred points worth of magic trinkets and powers (that could be as much as 600 points if you really wanted!) and you get either a 2500 point army, or you can scale the troops back to 2250 and have lots spare to raise with.

So now i’m going to have a look at the equivalent GW stuff.

Starting with the characters.

You get a Blood Dragon on winged nightmare, Konrad and Manfred on foot, The aristocratic Lady vampire, and a Wight BSB.

The troops are 5 boxes of ghouls, 4 boxes of skellies and 4 boxes of Grave guard, 5 Black knights and 5 Wraiths.

All of that comes in at £342.50. You can save yourself a bit of cash by dropping the winged nightmare down to a Mounted Manfred (use it as a hellsteed still), and using chaos knight instead of black knights (converting them with some random ghoul and skellies bitz) it comes down to £311. I looked at using the battalion boxes to bring the price down more but it includes zombies and a corpse cart so wouldn’t make a good comparison.

So on a £vs£ comparison you are looking at £119 vs £311.

With the Mantic stuff you also get Free foam carry cases, posters, the Mantic points system and You also get 2 Screaming skull catapults (incase you decide to do tomb kings too)

The main problem that Mantic has at the moment is a lack of Zombies,(which are in the pipeline) Dire wolves and fellbats. But there is nothing stopping you using the Games workshop range to fill the gaps.

Members of the Rankings HQ team have been developing and running rankings systems for the past 10 years however recently the focus has shifted to offering a more complete online service that players of games around the world can benefit from.

The result is an online international gaming portal where players of various game systems and different countries can have a single site that lists all the results, articles, clubs and tournaments they are interested in. Players are able to create and update their RHQ profile for free giving them the ability to network with other players instantly via the “friends” and messaging functionality as well as stay abreast of the happenings in their areas of interest via the event calendar and news feed engine.

The initial launch of the site includes Warhammer Fantasy for the United Kingdom, Australia, United States and New Zealand with Warhammer 40K and Flames of War game systems to be launched soon. There are also several countries preparing data that will be added to RHQ in the near future.

Development of Rankings HQ is ongoing and new functionality will be released on a regularly basis both planned and based on player feedback.

Each year the Irresistible Force and Bad Dice team analyse the previous year’s data along with the growth and trends of the scene to see whether any adjustments are required to better represent the following year’s tournament results. As the system matures there is less need to make changes and as a result the 2009 rankings system remained unchanged from the year before. However this year we have experienced a tremendous amount of growth in both the Australian and UK Warhammer Fantasy tournament scenes. I have held discussions with many players and TOs throughout 2009 and gleaned what I could from the countless emails I receive each year with suggestions and queries from players. My goal is to ensure the rankings system is as good a fit for the tournament scene as possible and for it to be a fair, just and equitable representation of a player’s achievements at tournaments they attend throughout the year. So after much consideration the following change will be incorporated into the Bad Dice Warhammer Fantasy rankings for 2010.

100 Rankings Points Threshold

With the increase in popularity of tournaments in general we find ourselves in the situation where more and more events are offering the maximum of 100 rankings points. In just a few years we have progressed from having 10 tournaments that reached the 50 player threshold in 2008 to the 14 we had in 2009 and now 2010 promises to have even more with alot of the current 50+ player events expanding to be closer to 100 players.

A bi-product of this trend is the reduction in the spread of scores for players across the spectrum and a positive skew of the distribution towards the top end. This trend will continue as tournaments around the country continue to grow in size. The feeling is a slight increase in the 100 rankings point threshold will relieve the pressure on the system and provide some room for the rankings engine to grow as the tournament scene does.

For 2010 the number of players required to enable the awarding of 100 rankings points to the winner will be set at 60. This will be in effect immediately following the conclusion of the 2009 tournament season.

The Bad Dice Masters 2009

The event will take place in Derby on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of January

Invitation Criteria

The invitations will be handed out as follows:

1. Winner of the 2008 Masters – Martin Bunting
2. Top 15 ranked players in the Bad Dice and Irresistible Force Warhammer Fantasy UK rankings

The invitations will be sent out at the close of the 2009 Tournament Season. The last date for submitting results is Monday 7th December 2009.
If you receive an invitation to the Masters you have 1 week to confirm your attendance before your place is offered to the next player in the rankings.

As the tradition of the Masters grows from year to year we introduce new elements that enhance the experience for the players involved. As in the previous year we will be presenting an award to those that are attending the Masters, and we also will be presenting the “Best Army General” awards for the highest ranked player for each army at the end of the tournament season.

As you can see from this pic the Harpies are positioned to block the dark riders charging past them. The Dark riders charge the harpies who choose to flee, rolling 12"

The nearest model from the harpy unit moves directly away along a line from the center of the Dark Rider unit. The other 4 harpies move along a parellel path.

The Dark riders wheel to follow the harpies and that leaves them with only 11" of charge distance remaining so they find themselves just out of range and the charge is failed.

The Dark Riders must wheel to go after the harpies, that uses up 7" of their move leaving them only 11". The Harpies are just too far away and the charge is failed

In our last example the Dark Rider are blocking the Spearelves. The Spears declare a charge and the Dark Riders choose to flee. They roll 7"

Normally we would dive straight into WFB and go for the win. This time around we want to have a go at trying a different system and also try to use the podcast and the gaming community to raise some cash for charity.

This year Both Ben and I will be playing 40k.

Apart from the fact that we have only played a handful of games between the 2 of us over the last 3 editions and not played any of the latest edition of the game.

And the CC is 12 weeks away….

What we want to do is to get listeners to donate their unwanted and unused Space Marines to our cause. If you have a few spare sprues lying around them pop them in the post. Anything that gets sent in will be painted by the 2 of us and put into our list for the event. We will keep the website and podcast upto date with our progress. Battle reports, photos, painting guides and all that sort of stuff will be put on this page.

One the event is over, the armies that we have assembled will be sold on ebay and all the cash will be give to the charity Help for Heroes

So start rummaging through your bitz boxes and send in anything you can spare. If you have some stuff that you would like to donate then send me a email at charity40k@baddice.co.uk so i can pass you the mailing address.

Bad Dice - So Bad we're Good!

I have a bit of an update about whats been going on behind the scenes at Bad Dice.  With Ben J and Myself running and playing in Masters event over the weekend there was no time to record a ‘proper’ Episode 1.  The Masters coverage was all on the fly with no real planing (as you may tell from listening) However, now the weekend is out of the way and i have some time to do some planning and website work so there will be another episode recorded later this week. 

We decided only recently that a Podcast for the UK scene was needed and set about making it happen, I only took delivery of the recording equiptment on Tuesday3rd Feb, and the first show was live on the Sunday.  The next Episode will cover all the things you would expect to find in Episode 1. All about your Hosts to start with seeing as we didn’t realy introduce ourselves in ep.1  We will cover our ideas for the future of BadDice, the things we like to do in the hobby as well as our Army selections for the 2 events later this month.

And seeing as the Lizardman book was released on Saturday we might also have a go at putting together a few lists.
