From now on Thursdays are going to be a more community driven episode, either lots of quick fire questions, tackling an army list or discussing a paint job.  Whatever topic, I want to give you the listener the chance to get on the show.

Archer Horde

In todays episode I talk about using a Horde of Archers.

With the new Martial Prowess rule allowing High Elf archers to fire in 3 ranks the Archer Horde became a lot more viable but they are not the first, nor will the be the last, army to use this tactic of masses bowfire from a single unit, they may however do it the best.

All the elves, Empire, Tomb Kings, Orcs and Goblins, Dwarfs and even Bretonnians have access to this tactic and on this episode I talk about the reasons why you may or may not want to try it out.

Top 5 Warmachines

This week the Garagehammer podcast talked about their top 5 war machines. This sparked some discussion on twitter as to what is the best warmachine for the points. In this episode I give my reply to the garagehammer Top 5.

5. Magma Cannon

st5 D3 Wounds. A huge range for what is a flame cannon on crack. 24 + Artillery dice + Template. Access to an engineer is also a huge bonus

4. Warp Lightening Cannon

The dreaded WLC has been a long time friend and foe of mine. Having played with and against this warmachine I have a healthy respect for the high strength template landing in a unit. The fact that the shots are always no armour save and always do d6 wounds makes up for the random strength value.

3. Brettonian Trebuchet

No frills just high strength. Cheap and strength 5 all the time compared to the dwarf grudge thrower that comes in at an extra

2. Doom Diver

80 points. st5. No Armour Save. In the days of Empire, Warriors and lots of other high armoured targets. Not much more to add here other than its really cheap and when its dies no orc units will be bothered. One of my faves.

1. Dwarven Cannon.

This has a massive list of reasons that it is number 1. 30 points cheaper as standard than the Empire version and when runed up is massivly reliable and accurate. Also has s ton of options for fun runes that while not the optimal choice can make for some interesting gems. They also get access to a 4th wound with the engineer upgrade. Overall this guy is hard to beat in a straight up warmachine challenge.

Filling Large Bases

On todays episode I talk about how to fill the space on a large bases.

I have been building a Hellcannon and was unsure how to go about making it look like it fills the huge base it comes on rather than getting list in the middle of it.

On this episode I talk about the things I have done to make it look a like a small diorama without needing to spend too much time on it or do anything that requires any sort of advanced modelling skills.

While I did this on my Hellcannon the same would apply to similar models that have lots of space on their bases.

WWCD High Elves Monster Lists

I couldn’t let the High Elves release ‘fly’ by (see the pun….) without doing a high elves monster lists review, so in this episode I talk about some of the options that you have for putting out a full on high elves monster list  and the book has a few different kinds of list that could work.

On todays episode I talk about the list that I would initially be using if I were to make the jump into high elves.

The power in the book seems to me to come in a couple of ways.

1. Fast attack flyers.

This style of list will be fast and furious and be driven by the flying large targets. it will unfortunatly also be quite fragile and ultimatly I feel that Warriors of Chaos do this list better.

2. Flexible Combined Arms

I don’t think that this style of list will win any awards for out and out power, but it screams to me of similarities to the old powerful elf builds. Flexibility to have an answer for mosth things yet no out right power that would attract the attention of the dreaded comp stick.

The list I would run to begin with would be the 2nd style and look something like this:

• Archmage, Lv4, Book Of Hoeth, Shadow
• Loremaster ,Dispel Scroll
• Noble, BSB, Reaver Bow, Potion of Strength
• 10 Archers, Mu
• 10 Archers, Mu
• 10 Archers, Mu

An Unusual Lizardman List

In this episode I talk about an unusual lizardman list that I saw in action at Adepticon and had sent in to the show by a listener.

Michael Jordal has been posting on the Bad Dice forums for a few years and during that time I have seen his progress on a Lizardman army that often has some unusual options included.

At ApeptiCon Michael was using this list.

• Slann, Becalming, Rumination, Cupped Hands, Devine Plaque of Protection, Dragon Bane Gem, Relic Sword, BSB, Standard of Discipline
• 25 Saurus Warriors
• 25 Saurus Warriors
• 10 Skink Skirmishers
• 6 Kroxigor
• 6 Kroxigor
• 6 Kroxigor
• Salamander
• Salamander

He sent me the following email explaining how he gets the best from it.

So my list is definitely on the weird side and probably considered sub optimal, but I have had a bit of success with it and I enjoy playing it. I won a small one day tourney at the FFG Event Center with a similar build and placed fairly high at Capital City Carnage with it as well as getting the 10th place finish at Adepticon.

The build really requires my Slann to get some magic off and with the lore of light and focus of rumination it is possible to cast every spell in the lore. How I approach the magic phase is really dependent on the match up and what is currently in combat. I will boost pha’s protection a lot and sometimes boost speed of light, but will hardly ever boost timewarp. Generally Timewarp is better on a saurus unit, especially if they have Speed of Light so I can feel like a HE for a bit, but sometimes if a kroxigor unit has Speed of Light I will cast it on them to cancel the asl and get them to strike before losing a model or two.

Shems is often cast first using one die from the pool and one free die to try and draw out some dispel or get rid of some annoying unit.

First turn I will often cast a timewarp on a krox unit to have some tasty very long range charges on my second turn with the double movement. If I can run right through a unit and then have a Kroxigor unit in the rear of his army I am usually pretty happy.

The Slann runs by himself unless I am facing dreaded 13th and then he bunkers. He is pretty well protected against most everything else. He can catch my opponents off guard when I charge him in too. He has seen Nicol’s Prince on Star Dragon off the board and during Adepticon he ran down a chimera. Being solo I really am only worried about the top and bottom result of the miscast table and have the cupped hands to toss that one over to my opponents if need be.

It definitely suffers from a lack of chaff units. I would love to have some chamos in it as well. The salamanders usually march forward first turn and shoot and then flee or get in the way. The skinks get out in the middle to redirect and such as well.

I have tried running all the Kroxigors together in a horde too and that was pretty fun as well and had the benefit of only needing to cast spells on one unit, but it was definitely an eggs in one basket deal.

Warhammer FAQ Updates

The latest Games Workshop FAQ’s went up last week and I have only just had chance to cover them on the show.

There were a whole load of changes both major and minor. In this episode I will address some of the bigger issues and give my commentary on what I think this means for the game.

From the rulebook FAQ I talk about the changes to Spirit Leech, Crumbling, Impassable terrain at the edge of the table, The Burning Head and Killing Blow.

Top 5 AdeptiCon Experiences

AdeptiCon finished well over a week ago and I’m still buzzing from the whole event. In this episode I talk about the Top 5 Experiences at AdeptiCon that I want to pass on to anyone who might be interested in attending in future years.

I hope you can take something from my Adepticon experiences and have them inspire you to do similar awesome things in your hobby.

5. Crystal Brush

The level of painting in the crystal brush was just amazing. Period. But it was not only the high end entries that had me inspired. The cabinets were filled with models from all ranges of quality from the eye watering incredible to the down right bad. I really enjoyed the whole set up and the inclusion of all qualities.

4. Exposure To New Games

My name is Ben and I am a Warhammer Fanboy. Its true. I mainly play at tournament or at Warhammer World and do not often take part in other games. I had loads of chances to look at other games being played, get demos if I wanted, see new models and manufacturers of hobby related products.

3. Warhammer US Style

No Comp, lots of scenarios. The silly rock hard no comp UK lists were nowhere to be seen, held at bay by the soft scores in both sports and painting. If you set out to win Adepticon then you need to have an army painted to a good standard and it be well presented. for the most part this eradicated the things like Vampire Counts using ogres as Crypt Horrors and Griffons as Terrorghiests or other armies bringing mismatched and un finished units and still playing like they want to win the event.

2. The ‘Con’ Experience

At AdeptiCon I could have played all day and night if I wanted. Round the clock there was things to do, places to hang out and generally loads going on. I loved this.

1. The Community

The main thing that I would take away from this event is the amount of new people I met and had the opportunity to hang out with. Anyone on the fence about competitive warhammer and unsure of attending an event should take this as an example of why they should jump right in. Granted, as a podcaster I was well known and had lots of people to talk to, but you can very easily arrange to meet people at the event and make tons of new friends!

I was wondering if you had any tips on builds and how to get the most out of flying characters? Specifically ones using the magic carpet magic item? It might make a good daily episode since all armies have access to it!

Here is the character build I’m considering, any pointers would be great!

At the Forge World open Day i saw some a Space Marine Legion with a cool paint effect.  Neil from the Forgeworld studio has painted his tanks and power armour using sponges.  This inspired my to do a show talking about how use can use sponges while painting.

I talk about the technique that Neil used to paint his marines and how he got the awesome effect on the white and blue in these models.

I think talk about ways tha you can use sponges to apply a weathering effect.  I have done this in the past on a Flames of War tank army and it works really well!

On todays show I talk about my top 5 all mounted armies.

5 – Warriors of Chaos

How can an all mounted list not include the Warriors.  With Dogs, Chariots and Marauder Horsemen in the core section, more chariots, Dragon Ogres, Knights and fast cav in special and the Skullcrushers in rare, the warriors are a list that can bring a mounted counter to most opponents.  Their characters have plenty of choice too from Dragons to Discs and to top if off is the flying beasties that they can bring.

4 – Dark Elves

With only a few options the Dark Elves are perhaps and odd addition to this list, but they get in on the strength of their flexibility in the character area.  They have access to Dragons, Manticores, Pegasus, Chariots, Cold Ones and Steeds.  The Druchii can pull off a mobile guerrilla force with plenty of magic and shooting as easy as they can go all out attack.

3 – Tomb Kings

The Khemri can make a real fun mounted force.  Chariots, War Sphinx, Necropolis Knights and Horse Archers fill up the list, character have plently of options too.  Settra, Arkan the Black on a flying Chariot and thats without mentioning kings and princes.

2 – Empire

This list comes in at around 1900-2000 points for troops and command, it leaves some points for characters, or you can drop some units to get even more characters in there.

• 6 Knightly Orders,
• 6 Knightly Orders
• 12 Inner Circle Knights,Full Command
• 5 Pistoliers,
• 5 Pistoliers,
• 5 Outriders,
• 5 Outriders,
• 5 Reiksguard Knights,
• 3 Inner Circle Knights,
• 3 Inner Circle Knights,
• 1 Steam Tank,
• 1 Luminark of Hysh,
• 1 Celestial Hurricanum,

1 – Orcs and Goblins

The all mounted Orc and Goblin army has a load of options!  You can do all goblins with chariots, spiders and wolves or throw some orcs in for good measure.  The Orc and Goblin’s have access to 6 different mounted special characters and 21 different mounted Lord and Hero options without a duplicate!

The rest of the list is full of flavour too and it is for this reason that Orcs iz Da Best!

Russ Veal joins me to have a South Coast GT preview. We talk about the army list trends, what the new army books are looking like, how the older books are adapting and what we can expect to see doing well in 2013.

Almost 20% of the lists at the South Coast GT are Warriors of Chaos with 38 players.  The next closest is Ogre Kingdoms with 18 while most of the rest of the field is between the 10-13 bracket.

The Warriors of Chaos lists are quite similar but there is still a good amount of variation between them with a mix of super princes and double princes.  Warrior blocks are in good attendance usually backed up by a few chariots. Throgg and his trolls are common too.

Elsewhere Tecilis is make a strong showing in the High Elves lists and there are a couple of tasty Vampire Counts armies.

The Daemons of Chaos armies have a common theme of 2 skull cannons but other than that one feature they are quite varied with a 3 different Greater Daemons making a showing.

Chaos War Mammoth

Today I am looking at the chaos War Mammoth in all its glory.

In a tribute to the Warhamer Achivements Event that is coming up in a couple of months time, I have a review of the Mammoths rules and give some tips on both using it, and also facing it in the game.

It comes in at 500 points and £240 from forge world.  Full rules can be found in the storm of magic book.

It really is the king of monsters with it’s 10 wounds and the ability to thunderstomp almost everything in the game apart from the occasional other huge monster.  It can put out an obscene amount of damage and is really hard to bring down in combat.

Warhammer Buildings

Following on from a lot of questions at the Throne of Skulls I take a look at the rules for Warhammer Buildings .

Buildings often throw up some odd situations so I go over the rules and give a commentary on each section of them.  I talk about the ways that the rules work and how they can impact the games, as well as things that you should watch out for when interacting with buildings.

Some of the often misplayed sections that I cover are;

• Garrisoning a building, including what can and can’t enter a bulding
• Charging a building and maximising to it
• Shooting, especially with template and War Macines
• Combat and combat resolution
• The Building FAQ’s

Thunderers or Quarrellers

Today I compare the differences between Thunderers or Quarrellers in a dwarf army.

I look at each unit and list the pros and cons.  Both have their advantages and can be used in different situations.  There are lots of factors that can be compared including upgrades, equipment options and points values.

Different unit sizes can also factor in to which type you would decide to go with.  Larger units can really benifit from access to great weapons, but a unit of 20 Thunderers are very scray to try and close down.

Thunderers are great at pure stopping power in the shooting phase, but Quarrellers have the flexibility or extra range, the option to take Great Weapons and also the fact that they can be upgraded to be rangers.  the thunderers are quite expensive too.

Overall it is a tough choice between Thunderers or Quarrellers in a dwarf army and each individual Dwarf army list will have reasons to include, or discount the 2 options.

I used 40 Executioners at the Throne of Skulls and I talk about how they did in each of the games.

I had 5 aweseom games against 5 really nice opponents, Ben Ackroyd, Andy Lester, Dan Green, Dan Karkoci and Oliver Smith.  I didn’t play a huse range of armies faceing Dark Elves and Beastmen twice with the final army being Skaven.

In most of my games the Executioners played a starring role.  They were usually where the fighting was the most fierce and really got stuck in!

I took part in th ethrone of Skulls Event this weekend and I have to say that it was one of the best gaming weekends I have ever attended.  From start to finish the organisation, atmosphere and general enjoyment levels were top notch.  Once you get past the fact that it is not a tournament then you can really enjoy the proffesional levels of service that GW have at these weekends.

I’m taking Dark Elves to the Throne Of Skulls. The event is 2000 points, no comp and uses scenarios. All of these things have impacts on list design.

I wanted to take a horde of Executioners to this event so I set about building my list around that unit.

In this What Would Curry Do? episode I talk about how I make choices in my list based on the units I am using and how they interact with one another.  I talk about what will help the Executioners take a starring roles and how much help they need.  I have a few decisions that I need to make to finalise the list.

Running Away!

Today I talk about running away and some of the tactics used when fleeing.

With the releases of Warriors of Chaos (that are often Marked Khorne) and Daemons of Chaos that can’t flee, the ability to run away can be a well used tool and will be even more useful in the coming months.

I talked about the double flee tactic back in episode 14 and in this show I will give some more ideas that you should think about when running away.

The trusty Glade Riders return as I give examples of how units should be positioned when fleeing, how they will move and what you can anticipate during the action.  There are things that you can do to alter where your units final position will be and I tell you how to do these tricks to run rings around your opponents.

I also talk about how you can be prepared for what will happen after you have decided to run away, and how to make sure that all goes according to plan.

Dealing With Chariots

In this episode I will talk about some of the ways that different armies can deal with chariots.

Yesterday I talked about some of the best chariots in the game and recent army releases have seen a resurgence in the use of chariots.  I talk about each army and how they can play against chariots.  I did this in a previous episode where I addressed each race and talked about their options.  Last time it was well received so I will do the same with chariots.

Beastmen can use big blocks and soaking up casualties, Dark Elves have Pendant wearing Pegasus Riders and Ogres do what they always do and use Ironblasters, these are just some of the tips I give in this episode.

I offer up a different piece of advice for each race and try to not repeat any tips where possible.

Fortnight in Fantasy

We have had loads on recently, 2 tournaments since the party on episode 100.  Team Bad Dice went to the Serbian Sauerkraut Team Event and also the Merseyside Meltdown tournament.

Gaming – Other than tournaments, I have played vs the new Daemons with my Chaos Dwarfs.

Painting – I have now finished 23 Infernal Guard, Magma Cannon, Iron Daemon and 3 Bull Centaurs. I have in progress a Hellcannon and the Forgeworld Character set.  Gareth has been over to see Mikey and the guys at Golem to get a painting lesson and Mark has made more progress on his orcs.

Other – I’ve not watched any films but have done a ton of reading! Book 2 and 3 of the Hunger Games. The Name of the Wind and the Wise Mans Fear by Patrick Rothfuss and I’m now on the latest in the Dresden series from Jim Butcher, I picked them all up from Audible

Top 5 Chariots

Today is top 5 tuesday and I am talking about my top 5 Chariots in Warhammer

Firstly I should define what a chariot is.  I could go with the simple way of anything with the unit type Chariot (CH) but that opens it up to the Ironblaster and the Skull Cannon, and even things like Mortis Engine and Chaos War Shrine.  Instead I am going to compile my list based only on ‘Vanilla’Chariots, or at least chariots that have their main role has being combat support units rather than pseudo-warmachines or units that have no classification and chariot is the easiest way of making them work.

So onto the list.

There are 31 different chariots in Warhammer across the 16 races (I’m including Chaos Dwarfs here), some of them you see used in every army others are not quite so common.

• 5. Chaos Warrior Chariot

If Carlsburg mage generic heavy chariots….

• 4. Tomb King Chariots

The ultimate utility chariot that has lots of options but excels at none. Its a great at fitting different roles as required

• 3. Gorebeast Chariot

The ultimate heavy chariot.

• 2. Goblin Wolf Chariots

A bargin at 50 points and such a useful unit while being totally disposable

• 1. Exalted Seeker Chariot

The big crazy daemonette chariot, I’m not sure why I like it so much but I do!  Its my top chariot in Warhammer.

How To Paint Fire

Today I talk about how to paint fire.

I have been painting a Hellcannon so have been looking at different ways to paint fire.  There seems to be 2 main methods to follow and I talk about both of them in this episode.

Method 1 – You start from a darker base like a red of brown and work up to a yellow or even white on the tips of the flames.

Method 2 – This is the more realistic effect but is harder to get it looking good.  Its the opposite way around with the lightest colour being closest to the centre of the fire and getting darker as it works its way to the tips.

Hexwraiths

I interview Russ Veal to get the lowdown on Hexwraiths. Russ tells us how he has been using them to great effect in the teams event and how you can get the best from them.

Hexwraiths are born in the very depths of the Underworld, their only goal to hunt down those who have cheated death. They share many similarities with Cairn Wraiths, and their scythe-like weapons are just as deadly (if not more-so). Because of their incorporeal forms, a Hexwraith can simply shimmer between worlds, their scythes re-materialising inside the bodies of their foes. Armour is no protection against these cackling Undead monstrosities – they will run down their victims swiftly and violently and claim their souls for the afterlife.

Today I go over all the units in warhammer and pick out the top 5 that have the most special rules.

Initially I was expecting the Wood Elves to score highly in this but after looking into it a little more I realised that they were far from the most special Rules driven army out there.  The Vampires scored higly across a lot of their units but didn’t quite make the top 5, the same could be said for Tomb Kings.

In the end I went for:

5 – Kddai Destroyer.

This guy has 9 special rules and is also a monster.  The monster rules alone can be further split down to create a lengthly list.

4 – Snotling Pump Wagons

With only a few basic special rules its the upgrades and crew that top off the Pump Wagon.

3 – Stegadons

The normal Stegadon has 10 special rules, the Ancient version with engine of the gods upgrade really starts racking them up

2 - Cauldron of Blood

The Cauldron is a huge amount of rules, and is also a War Machine and a Character and can be the BSB.  Its a massive list when you break it all down.

1 – Arachnarok Spider

The Huge Spider has a huge list of rules.  2 different types of strider, 2 different types of poison and also a few options.  It was the first model on a massive base and thus deserves its massive list of special rules.

New Daemons of Chaos Rumour Round-up

Today I am talking about the New Daemons of Chaos Rumours that have ben all over the forums and social networks this week.

Photos from the next issue of White Dwarf have been leaked and are all over sites like Warseer, The Warhammer Forum and the Plastic Krak blog.  These same websites also have rumoured rules from the release.

Rumoured Rules spotted so far, all curtosy of fields of blood

Bloodletters of Khorne are now strength 4, with special rules MR1, Scaly skin 6+, Daemonic and Daemon of Khorne. They have the daemonic gift Hellblade…. 14 points

I cant see any reference to killing blow but that dosnt mean they loose it as the sword may grant it.

Pink Horrors stats stay the same, special rules are Daemonic, Daemon of Tzeentch, Blue horrors of Tzeentch, and a unit counts as a level 1 caster…. 13 points

Yay Blue horrors of Tzeentch. No idea how it works but yay!

Plaugebearers are strength 4 Toughness 4, have the Daemonic gift plaguesword, and are Daemons of Nurgle, and Daemonic…. 13 points

Daemonettes get 2 attacks, and become Daemons of Slannesh + Daemonic for 11 points

Bloodcrushers are now special, 3+ a unit, the jugger mounts get toughness 4 and 3 wounds like the WOC ones, and are 65 points. With the scaly skin rules Daemons now have a 3+ 5++ save monstrous cav option!

Flamers appear to have the same stats as the WD rules, and are 40 points. Special rules flames of Tzeentch, Daemons of Tzeentch, Warpflame, Daemonic and skirmishers.

There appears to be an option to upgrade a unit of Plaguebearers to have regenerate, and another option that if you score any roll of 6 to hit with a  poisonattack, an additional strength 4 hit is made. Another option is upgrading poison to 5+

My thoughts on these, if they prove to be true:

• Bloodletters look right if Hellblade gives KB. Scaly Skin is a bit of a red herring. The drop in Str and 2 pt increase rebalance things.

• Don’t understand Horror rules. Are Pink Horrors still caster?

• Not sure why you wouldn’t take Plaguebearers over Bloodletters –  1 pt increase for +1 Str – yes please

• The Bloodcrushers have worse rider than Skullcrushers, but are 13 pts cheaper and have 5+ Ward

Order of the Close Combat Phase

This is the third part in the series of episodes about sequences in the game, this final instalment is all about the close combat phase.

The Close Combat Phase is probably the most detailed and rules heavy part of the game.  i would say in game play alone it is the movemnt phase that is king but the amount of rules in the combat phase is very daunting.

The are a number of areas that are better broken down into sections.  These are Pre Combat, Combat and Post Combat.

Pre Combat

• Starting the close combat phase, the player whose turn it is can choose the combat to fight first. After thta you get into the order of the start of combat actions which take place in the following way
• Make Way, Fear and abilities like Nurgle Rot are all at the same time, the players turn is the decider.
• Impact hits
• Challenges

Combat

• Striking order in Initiative steps
• Allocating attacks at each step
• Breath weapons at each step, decided to be used before rolling to attack for that step
• Resolve Combat Resolution

Post Combat

• Reforming – Roll off if both players want to attempt. winner chooses order
• Decide to Persue
• Roll to Flee
• Roll to Persue
• Reslove Flee
• Reform and restraining units
• Move persuers, controlling player chooses the order to move the units.
• Move on to the next combat and repeat.

Sequences In The Magic and Shooting Phase

This is the second part in the series of episodes about sequences in the game, today is the Magic and Shooting Phase sequences.

Both of these phases are very similar.  The magic phase has some things that are to be applied at the start of the phase and then you move on to generating the winds of magic and bonus dice.

The key things to remember in the magic phase are:

• Some spells and rules are done at the start of the phase.
• Broken Concentration effects the use of scrolls if your Mage has failed to dispel
• A Vortex moves at the end of the phase
• Remains in Play spells can be dispelled at any time.

The shooting phase is simple and the only things I would consider to be of note are:

• Choose a unit and resolve its shooting.
• If the unit has a character in it then he shoots at the same time as the rest of the unit.
• Resolve any panic tests as they are inflicted.

Sequences In The Movement Phase

The Warhammer rules are based a lot on strict orders and I cover the Movement Phase sequences in this episode.

Start of the turn is exactly as it sounds.  Lots of things can happen here and they are always specified in their own rules.

Next up is Declaring Charges.  This is very simple but also quite complicated.

1. Declare a charge
2. Declare reaction
3. Resolve reaction and all things brought on by that reaction.
4. Possible test to Redirect Charge
5. Return to 1 or move on.
6. Take any frenzy tests required
7. Choose a unit to roll charge distance and move charge or failed charge.
8. Choose another unit to resolve until all are completed

Moving onto Compulsory movement and this one is quite easy.  Rallying, Fleeing and moving.  Rallying must come first.  Test to rally and resolve the reform or flee move then continue on to the next unit.

The Remaining moves section of the movement phase is an area that has the most flexibility but also a few key orders.  Aside from the fact that you should pick a unit and move it before moving onto the next you also have tests to perform for Swift Reforms and Marching.

• Choose a unit
• Decide if you want to March or Reform or move.
• If Marching take a test and perform the march move.
• If Swift Reform is desired take the test and carry out the manoeuvre
• Move your unit.
• Choose a new unit.

Top 5 Dragons

On todays show I talk about the top 5 dragons in the Monstrous Arcanum book.

The dragons in this book all have different and unusual abilities and each of them is awesome in its own way.  I put them in the order that I would rate their power level.

I decided not to cover the Emperor Dragons as they are too many points to fit into a normal game and even a Storm of Magic game would be difficult to include one.

So onto the top 5.

5th – Shard Dragon

This guy has some awesome rules but is just too slow to be higher in the list

4th – Warp Fire Dragon

A nice all round dragon with anti-skaven specialities

3rd – Toad Dragon

A beast of a model and massively resilient just lacking in damage output if it can’t thunder stomp

2nd Carmine Dragon

Its all about the breath weapon on this guy.

1st Magma Dragon

Overall the most rounded, lot’s of damage output and high toughness and wounds alongs with a regen save to keep it alive. We have a winner!

The Horus Heresy is a big series, consisting of 24 novels, a number of short stories and at least half a dozen audio dramas.  One question that I’m frequently asked is how someone new to the series can catch up on all the events.  Or more specifically, exactly which stories should be read.  Now this isn’t a particularly straightforward answer, which probably won’t surprise anyone, given the complexity of the storyline.  However I’ve spent some time considering the question and I have come up with what I believe is a list of the essential elements that must be read.

Before going any further though, I will state for the record that I recommend reading the entire collection (even the less regarded works) if you have the opportunity.  There are great details, back stories and descriptions in all of the works, and they all add to the rich tapestry of the 30K universe. It’s also inevitable that some of the (in my not-so-humble opinion!) best novels wouldn’t make my list of ‘essential’ reading, and in fact none of the best short stories do, and if you only read the shortened list then you’ll be missing some real treats.  You can see my earlier blogs on the top 5 novels here and top 5 short stories here.

Before Black Library started the heresy series, the Horus Heresy was firmly embedded in the history of Warhammer 40K, but the known details were limited to a few key events. And of these, even fewer had been covered to any extent.  The Siege of Terra is the most well known and the only one to have significant coverage, and clearly this is going to be the culmination of the Heresy series.  After this, the most well known events were the three main ambushes of the loyalist legions during the opening moments of the Heresy; the Iron Hands, Raven Guard and Salamanders at the Dropsite Massacre, the Blood Angels at the Signus Cluster, and the Ultramarines at Calth.  It is these events that I consider to be essential to any Horus Heresy short list.

The early novels in the series set up the background to the heresy; a newly created Imperium of Man, full of optimism, dynamism and full of belief in the crusade to reclaim the lost colonies of mankind… and unknowingly destined for a cataclysmic fall.  The first 3 novels work together to build towards the climax of the events on Istvaan III (where 4 traitor legions purge the remaining loyalist warriors from their ranks).  All 3 would make my must read list.

The next novel, The Flight of the Eisenstein, also makes my must read list.  There is some overlap between this and the earlier 3 novels, covering the build up to Istvaan III.  More significantly for the short list, it also covers how the news of Horus’s betrayal reaches the loyalist forces and the Emperor on Terra.  In my opinion, this is a key element of the story, not only in itself, but also because it frames the Imperium’s response… and therefore the next novels in the series.

The 5^th novel in the series, Fulgrim, is also the 5^th book on my shortlist.  Much of the early part of the novel isn’t required reading. It covers the reasons why the Emperor’s Children legion, and their Primarch, decided to follow Horus, which in my opinion is interesting and nice to know about, but not essential.  Where it is absolutely critical is during the later elements of the novel, which covers the Istvaan V campaign (more commonly referred to as the Dropsite massacre) in the greatest detail of any novel we have currently.  As mentioned earlier, the Dropsite massacre is one of the signature events of the heresy, as it is where the full extent of the Heresy is revealed.  From a strategic standpoint, it is this event that allows the traitor forces to gain the upper hand and therefore take the initiative within the Heresy.

At this point, my shortlist is looking more like the standard ‘list’ of novels! However, of the next 10 novels there is only one that makes the shortlist.  These novels typically run concurrent to the first 5 novels, giving background detail, parallel story arcs and generally providing more context to the 31^st Millenium.  Most (possibly all) are worthy of reading, but few of them come close to making my essential short list.  The one that stands out to me as being required reading is The First Heretic.  I include this because it brilliantly book ends the entire period from the very beginnings of the Heresy to the events of the Dropsite massacre.  The First Heretic is the story of the first Primarch to fall to Chaos (Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers) and details how and why the heresy started.  However Lorgar’s story develops by returning to Istvaan V, where it builds on the events covered earlier in the series in Fulgrim.

To me The First Heretic marks a clear dividing line which draws the early stages of the Heresy to a conclusion.  Although unavoidable delays meant that Prospero Burns was released after The First Heretic, this book was originally scheduled earlier.  Following these two novels, The Age of Darkness anthology is the 17^th book released.  From here on, the main themes of the books are set in the post-Istvaan heresy period, and therefore it moves into new territory for us as readers.

It is possible to consider everything from The Age of Darkness as essential reading. Whilst we may have heard of some of the events covered, there is little detail within the heresy lore.  We also have little idea how the heresy will develop from here onwards, and therefore we don’t know which existing novels will be essential reading from a continuity persepctive for future novels.  However not only is that playing it safe, it also doesn’t cut down the list to allow a new reader to easily catch up, which is really the point of this blog!

Of the remaining novels within the series, there are two that cover the signature events I talked about earlier in this blog.  Know No Fear details the Word Bearers attack on the Ultramarines legion at Calth.  Fear to Tread is the story of the Blood Angels being ambushed by a daemonic horde at Signus.  I believe both should be read, partly because they’re great novels, partly because they are recently released anyway, but mostly because they complete the story of the major known events.

After this, I would leave it up to the reader as to when they join the series.  The latest novel is Betrayer, which I reviewed here, is the 24^th novel in the series.  I wouldn’t call this essential reading based on my definition in this post.  However I would recommend everyone gives it a go, as it is one of the best (if not the best) heresy novels to date.  Of course, depending on how quickly you catch up, there may be a better point to join in the future.

Of the novels I’ve missed out, I’m sure there are good arguments for including any or all of them in this list.  Certainly I expect the omission of the novels A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns (effectively a duology dealing with the Space Wolves being sent to punish the Thousand Sons for disobeying an edict from the Emperor) to be controversial. However (on the basis that cuts have to be made) in my mind it is enough to know this conflict happened without having to read the details.

• Warp Flame – Is it a flaming attack and how does it work with Regenerate if the regenerate rule has been removed during that phase by other flaming attacks.
• Warshrines – What happens when a Warshrine with a character mount has the character killed.
• Glean Magic – How does it work with spells that rely on their own Lore Attribute instead of the Tzeentch Attribute.

I give my thought on these rules and try and show some precedent from else where in the game as to how to handle them.

Fortnight In Fantasy

With 2 tournaments so close together we have not had time to play any games but we all got plenty of other hings done.  Mark talks about his Orcs and Goblins.  He has been painting Trolls.  Ben has been painting Bull Centaurs and other Chaos Dwarfs and Gareth talks about his planned trip to visit Golum Painting Studios for a day of lessons.

Basing Tips

Today I talk about a few different basing tips to get a really great looking base with minimal effort other than applying off the shelf effects.

I used Steve Wrens Wood Elves as an example of an amazing looking model that has been produced without any high end painting techniques.  Steve’s wood Elves look fantastic by painting neatly with a good colour scheme and a simple but super effective way of building up the bases.

I also talk about my recipe for snow basing and ask for tips on Water Effects.
