BDD 201 – How To Paint Fire

How to paint fire

How To Paint Fire

Today I talk about how to paint fire.

I have been painting a Hellcannon so have been looking at different ways to paint fire.  There seems to be 2 main methods to follow and I talk about both of them in this episode.

Method 1 – You start from a darker base like a red of brown and work up to a yellow or even white on the tips of the flames.

Method 2 – This is the more realistic effect but is harder to get it looking good.  Its the opposite way around with the lightest colour being closest to the centre of the fire and getting darker as it works its way to the tips.

You can see some of the techniques I talk about on this website – http://www.hot-lead.org/advance/fire_prac.htm

My Hellcannon is still work in progress but i’m happy with how it is looking so far.

BDD 166 – How To Paint Ethereal, Balefire and Rust

How To Paint Ethereal, Balefire and Rust

Todays daily show is something slightly different with David Witek from Garagehammer presenting an episode on How To Paint Ethereals, Balefire and Rust.

I have been suffering with the dreaded Manflu and have totally lost my voice.  I put a call out for other podcasters to record a segment that I would play this week and the first of these is todays show.

David Witek from the Garagehammer Podcast hosts todays episode.  The subject is How To Paint Ethereal, Balefire and Rust.

David goes into detail on the method he uses for painting Ethereals.  He talks about the colours he uses and how they are applied.

Here are some pictures of the techniques and models mentioned in the episode.

I want to say a huge thanks to David for helping out with this episode, you can catch up with him on Twitter or over at Garagehammer.net

BDD 156 – Hobby Challenge and Plastic Eagles

Plastic Eagles

Hobby Challenge and Plastic Eagles

Episode 156 kicks off 2013 and I have a recap of the hobby things that have been going on over the last 2 weeks, the Bad Dice Hobby Challenge and the Plastic Eagles from the Hobbit Releases.

Over Christmas I had chance to really get stuck into my Chaos Dwarfs.  The going is still pretty slow but I am making consistent progress.  I am nearly half way through my Bull Centaur unit and have finished my Magma Cannon.  I have painted my 3 Centaurs using 3 different methods for the skin but one of them I am not all that happy with.  i’m hoping thta I will be able to salvage it rather than needing a full repaint.

The Magma Cannon crew I am very pleased with and I think they may be the best job I have done for years.  Shame its on the crew of a War machine that will never get seen!

The Bad Dice Hobby Challenge

On New Years Day I announced the Bad Dice Hobby Chalklenge.  I borrowed the idea from the guys over at the Independent Characters Podcast.  You can find my details about it by reading the announcement and signing up On The Forums.

The blogs I talk about on the show are

Plastic Eagles

What Dwarf was released at the weekend and hidden amongst all the Dark Angels releases were these gems.  Plastic eagles.  Every High Elf player will be picking up a box of these guys and I predict that it will be the most ‘non warhammer’ model seen in Warhammer Armies this year.  I’m very surprised it has taken this long to get a plastic eagle release.

BDD 131 – Alternate Warhammer Miniatures

Alternate Warhammer Miniatures

Today I am going to talk about some of the Alternate Warhammer Miniatures that have recently and caught my eye.  This is by no means a definitive list of the best Alternate Warhammer Miniatures out there, instead it is my pick of the recent ones that I like the look of and in no particular order.

Studio McVey

First up is the latest release from Studio McVey, the Hathya Model.  Its a giant Elephant with 4 arms, whats not to like!  Its probably not a great fit in warhammer and is more suited to a Skorne Army in Warmachine but I really like it.  If I was playing Lizardmen I would certainly be looking at using it as a Slann.
Alternate Warhammer Miniatures
The next one that I have spotted and I like the look of is the Raging Heroes Manticore and Dark Elf Lord.  There are a few really nice Manticore Models on the market but this one is fantastic.  The Dark Elf lord on top looks especially evil.  The extra touch about the Raging Heroes Manticore is the fact that it doubles as a Lamassu with a simple head swap.
Alternate Warhammer Miniatures
I wanted to talk about the Titan Forge range of Pirate Ogres.  Mournfang Cavalry alternates of Ogres riding Crocodiles.  Its not just the Croc riders that are good but they are the pick of the range for me.

One range of models that I wanted to mention is the Avatars of War Chaos Warriors.  I would have included them in more detail but the website is very difficult to navigate.  In fact I found that with quite a few of the miniature ranges that I looked at, a better website that is easy to order from must certainly mean more sales!
Some news from the weekend is the Warhammer Forge release of the Mourngul. I like the model but i’m not entierly sure how I would include it in an army.

And Finally, a new trend I have noticed is for the resin base creators have started releasing mini diorama’s for the units bases.  microartstudio.com have just released a few different Arcane Ruins sets.

Daily Episode 76 – Clash of Swords and Bull Centaurs

The Clash of Swords event was run at Firestorm Games in Cardiff this weekend, normally I don’t talk at length about an event unless we attend or have a guest on but I wanted to mention this one as from the outside it seemd like a masterclass in how to run a smooth event.  I also picked up my Forge World Bull Centaurs this weekend and review them.
