BDD 124 – Items of Distinction, The Fellblade

Items of Distinction, The Fellblade

In this latest instalment of items of distinction I am going to talk about the Fellblade.

The Fellblade is a weapon of huge power, created by the Skaven Council of Thirteen and wielded by Alcadizaar the Conqueror to destroy the Necromancer Nagash.
This is the sword of swords that was created by the Skaven to destroy the greatest Necromancer to ever walk the world. Raw warpstone was smelted into stolen Gromril. Incantations o doom were heaped upon the cursed blade. Death itself was bound to its cutting edge and any with eldritch sight can see the aura of power and ruin that surrounds the wicked creation. No foe can stand before it and even the wielder must succumb to its baleful effects.
All attacks from the Fellblade are made with strength 10 and successful ward saves must be re-rolled.  Unsaved wounds are multiplied into D6 Wounds.  At the end of each of the wielders turns roll a D6.  on a 1 or 2 the wielder suffers a wound with no armour save.
This is clearly a weapon of unbelievable power but the problem is with the Character carrying it.  The Warlord has only 4 attacks at weapon skill 6.  He has a good Initiative at 7 but his lack of protection and the fact that The Fellblade will be doing wounds too makes it a difficult item to use.
The option that rally jumps out at me is to take him riding a War Litter.  This give him an extra bit of armour save and also a few extra attacks form the crew, but most importantly, and the reason I like this over taking him on a bone breaker is the fact that he still gets a Look Out Sir roll from friendly units.
Other than that I would want to build quite an aggressive skaven list but still keeping the ‘Skaven’ elements to the list that make it super powerful.

Daily 118 – Orcs and Goblins Items Of Distinction

Orcs and Goblins Items of Distinction.

Back in episode 99 I started a new feature that I said I would return to and that was Items Of Distinction.  This is an on going feature to talk about how to get the best out of these often overlooked relics from Warhammer Lore and in this 2nd installment I will talk about another one of the of the greatest items from the history of Warhammer, The Battle Axe of The Last Waagh from the Orcs and Goblins army book.

Almost all the top pointed items to choose from have a long and decorated history going back through numerous editions of the army books and also appear in the army books of other races.

The Battle Axe Of The Last Waaagh!

Rumour has it that this is the legendary axt that will start the battle that will end the world in an unstoppable orgy of fire and slaughter.  According to Orc myth, this will come about when Warlord Ragna Da Destroyer, Gork’s (or possibly Mork’s) chosen leader of The Last Waaagh!, goes mad with an axe and destroys the whole world.  This is the famous Orcish Day of Ragnarork, and forms the basis of one od Orcdom’s ost popular and enduring campfire tales.  It remains to be seen if The Battleaxe of the Last Waaagh! is actually the instrument that will bring about this destruction.  However, there is no doubt that it is one of the most powerful magicl weapons in the Old World.

The Battle Axe of the Last Waaagh! is 100 points so needs to be carried by a lord character.  Lets discount Goblins for obvious reasons and concentrate on the Orcs.  more to the point, Black or Savage.  Both have their benefits and also their downsides.  I talk about both in the episode.  I also talk about how to best keep your Warlord alive and deliver him into combat and the tools to use to help him along the way.

Daily Episode 99 – Items of Distinction – The Empire Runefang

Items of Distinction.

I received a great suggestion for a top 5 topic (from @Raffazza on twitter) to cover the expensive magic items from the army books and I decided to turn this into an on going feature to talk about how to get the best out of these often overlooked relics from Warhammer Lore and I decided to start with one of the greatest items from the history of Warhammer, the Empire Runefang

Almost all the top pointed items to choose from have a long and decorated history going back through numerous editions of the army books and also appear in the army books of other races.

The Empire Runefang.

At the dawn of the Empire, the Dwarf Runesmith Alaric the Mad forged a dozen magical swords for Sigmar’s twelve chieftains.  Each was a masterpiece, requiring all the skill and ancient knowledge of runecraft to create.  The Runefangs are thus blades of unsurpassed power, able to carve through gromril plate and Dragon scale  They are amongst the oldest and most treasured artefacts still surviving in the old world, and today the Runefangs are synonymous with the status, power and authority of the Elector Counts.

The Empire Runefang comes in at 85 points and is a huge investment to put into just a single magic weapon.  In this episode I talk about ways to get the most from a Runefang and how to craft a list around this item.

I start by including a Grand Master to wield it.  He is given a few choice items to maximise survivability.  I then discuss the other character options that should be considered to support him and also the units that he should be deployed with.
